Switching seasons, switching exercise?

I have a theory.
You ready? I know you're excited to hear this ;)
My theory, which is one I most definitely did not come up with on my own and has been mentioned numerous times on blogs and in health magazines and most likely on t.v and probably even from your own mouth discussing it with someone... But my theory is this:
As the seasons change so too does our exercise routines, either subconsciously or consciously.

Now I'm not blaming the changing seasons on the reason why I no longer run 2 hours at a time for around 20km, no, I stopped doing that because I was crazy and my body simply could not cope with that. I'm saying that the changing of seasons seems to have an effect on our bodies and the type of movement said bodies wish to do in order to make us feel good and healthy.

Of course there's obvious things that the changing of seasons produce that affect our exercise routines, like the earlier rising sun in Summer and the shorter, darker (often wetter and stormer) weather of winter determining whether or not we spring out of bed for an early morning workout.
Ah no, I don't believe so.

* I just wanted to add in a side note here; when I went out for an early morning run a couple days ago (it's winter here in Aus BTW) it was pitch black and I think my younger self's fear of the dark started to creep back in as I pounded the deadly silent pavement when the stars were still out shining!

Ok back to topic. So yes, the weather and the Suns antics will definitely affect when we would rather exercise, but on top of that I believe the body can sense the changing seasons and as a result changes our moving needs. I've noticed as the seasons have shifted into cooler, darker, winter that my body requires extra rest. I feel and look my best with a decrease in the exercise I was doing throughout Summer. It's almost as though my body knows I need extra energy to keep my internal body temperature constant and keep me from hyperthermia:) it might even know that my body needs to rest and rejuvenate before the summer sun returns and I'm out and about with exercise as well as all the other fun summer stuff! ( swimming, walking, riding bikes etc.)

My runs have become shorter becomes shorter runs feel better at this time. I do maybe 2 Purely Twins workouts at a time now instead of the 3 or 4 I would bash out in a morning. I prefer to stretch slowly and do yoga poses to get my muscles working after a long day at school and as a result of all this, I'm feeling good! This is what my body needs at this time and I am not one to question the genius-ness that is my body.

As well as a subconscious reduction in my exercise routine (I seriously didn't notice the reduction until a few days ago, when I had a memory of all the moving I would do in the summer time) I've moved from predominantly outdoor running, to predominantly tread mill running ( no darkness in the gym!) which would usually make me a little upset and frustrated but now I'm grateful that I can still get my heart rate up without catching a cold :).

I think it's an interesting concept and one of my favourite articles about it can be found here if you're still a little confused ( let's face it, I'm still unsure if there is any scientific evidence behind it... However similar scenarios are found in nature through the hibernation of animals during the winter etc.) or even just look at your own life and movement changes with the seasons.

Some interesting posts I found regarding this idea can be found here, here and here.

So instead of trying to fight the (seemingly natural) change in exercise my body is seeming to respond to, I'm going to embrace it and acknowledge that my body's needs change just like the seasons do year round! :)

What about you?
Do you find with a changing of seasons comes a changing in your exercise routine?
Do you enjoy outdoor running year round? I know the majority probably don't (me included) but I'm sure there's someone out there who loves running in the rain!
Would you ever divert to the treadmill in place of an outdoor run? There was a period in my life where I simply could not bring myself to mount the dreaded treadmill, but give me a book or my iPad and I'm good to go!

That's it from me this fabulous Friday, just splurging out the thoughts in my brain. As usual. Have a great rest of your day and get excited- it's almost the weekend!! Bye! :D

WIAW #61 A few strange ones ;)

Happy Wednesday friends!!
I must admit I have been enjoying these few days after exams and am literally doing nothing (except of course attending school... because, you know, for some reason I still have 3 weeks left until term break!) other than that I've been giving my brain a break, enjoying delicious food and getting my life back together (you know how un-important organisation becomes when you are going through a stressful/busy part of life!)

What delicious food you ask? Well it's a good thing it's WIAW! Below features a full day of eats from Tuesday, a rest day filled with all the yum! Thanks as always to Peas and Crayons for hosting this awesome link-up each week and gifting me with so much meal inspo!! Now- FOOD.

Breakfast: 7:15am
For breakfast I was in the mood for something cooling and refreshing (because it's winter. And I am strange) However I wanted to change things up from the typical smoothie I've been loving on lately. I decided to add in something warm and crunchy as well as chewy and fudge-y. Home-made granola!
Smoothie bowl topped with cashew butter granola

In my smoothie was 1 chopped frozen banana + 1 massive handful of spinach + 3 big spoons greek yoghurt + one handful frozen blackberries + 14 cup water- whazzed until smooth.
The delicious granola was a large handful of rolled oats + sprinkle chia seeds + sprinkle pepita seeds +  dash cinnamon +1-2 tablespoons cashew butter warmed with 1/3 cup almond milk in the microwave for 30 seconds- mixed together with a spoon until combined.
Sooo good! Perfect combo of refreshing, sweet, nutty, chewy, gaaaah!
Happy days :)

Snack: 11:00am
The usual snack for today:
Nothing beats a pot of peas
I'm usually still full from breakfast by the time recess rolls around but I also know I will be starving by 4th period (period before lunch) if I don't eat a little something. Peas to the rescue.
Lunch: 1:40pm
Brilliant salad for lunch featuring tri-coloured quinoa, carrot, cucumber, capsicum, spianch and avocado.
I didn't have too much time in the morning as I head to school earlier for period 0 (period before school starts) so this was a 'chop everything up and throw it in a tupper ware' kind of lunch. It was pretty good!
The quinoa made it ;)

Snack: 4:00pm
Again the usual snack. I feel like my snacks work for me, so why change them?
Delicious fruit (both the fuji apple and strawberries were perfectly ripe) with a mug of soy milk.
Nom.

Dinner: 6:15pm
I had a meeting that night at school so dinner was slightly earlier (but still mighty tasty!)
Under those two delicious fried eggs were some oven roasted sweet potatoes and potato, roasted with olive oil + cumin + oregano + basil, along with some steamed and roasted brussels sprouts and baked beans stirred through:
I was in a weird mood and didn't know what I felt like for dinner, hence the random collection of foods. It tasted pretty good though (and weirdly enough exactly what I wanted!)
So much yum in one bowl :)

Aaaand that's what I ate!

Your turn:
Do you make your own granola? What do you throw into yours?
Favourite fast throw together lunch?
Weirdest dinner you've put together lately that has totally satisfied?

That's all from me today folks, I hope you all have a lovely day, eat something delicious and smile :) Bye for now! :D

The Cashew Butter Cookie

I think Cashew butter is so underrated.

No body really thinks of cashew butter when it comes to nut butters. It's always peanut butter or almond butter or heck, even sunflower seed butter! And yet cashew butter just so happens to be one of my absolute favourite nut butters!!
It's flavour is a lot milder than peanuts and almonds however it has it's own distinct taste and texture and it rocks my socks! It's pretty much fudge...in nut form :)

So where am I going with this? Well a few mornings ago I wanted something warm, something fudge-y and something decadent for breakfast. Now I do have a vast array of dessert-like breakfasts on my recipe page but I was in the mood for creating!

I was also in the mood for cashew butter :)

Lightbulb!

Cashew butter cookies! I could already imagine the soft fudge-y cookies warm from the oven and there was no turning back now!

Ingredients:
1/2 heaped cup rolled oats
2 large tablespoons oat bran
1 teaspoon chia seeds
a dash of cinnamon
optional cookie additions- ie. choc chips, dried fruit, nuts, seeds etc. I chose some pepitas
1 1/2 heaped tablespoons cashew butter
1/4 cup milk of choice (I used vanilla almond milk)
1/4 mashed banana

Method:
1. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees celsius and line a tray with baking paper
2. Place the oats, oat bran, chia seeds, cinnamon and add-ins into a bowl and stir to combine
3. Place the cashew butter in a small bowl with the milk and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds (watch to make sure it doesn't over-flow)
4. Stir slightly and add to oat mixture along with banana, stir to combine
5. Scoop out cookie size balls and place onto baking tray flattening slightly
6. Bake for around 15 mins or until slightly golden and hard on top. (You'll probably be able to smell them too... soo good!)
7. Enjoy!!
I enjoyed mine with a black berry fro-yo, (1 handful blackberries, the remaining 3/4 banana and 3 big scoops greek yoghurt, all whazzed up together until smooth) delicious!

I can't even tell you how soft and delicious these cookies are, I'm much more of a warm gooey cookie than a hard crisp one, so if you're anything like me you'll love these!

The cashew butter definitely comes through and the taste and smell is utterly amazing.
Inside view:
 Oh yes :)
Paired with some refreshing and tangy fro-yo, this was one mighty fine breakfast!
I have a feeling I'll be converting back into my cookie obsession days!! (Not really too worried :)
Your Turn:
Do you like/ have you ever tried cashew butter?
What's your favourite nut butter?
Favourite cookie add-ins?

I hope you all have a fabulous rest of your day, smile, eat something delicious and do something you love! Bye for now friends!! :D

Avocado pasta sauce?

Hello, hello friendly friends!

Quick question: How many of you love creamy pasta sauces?
My guess would be the vast majority of you (just because my research outside of the computer world, in real life, has proven that the majority of people do actually like creamy pasta sauces).

As a kid, I hated them. Hated carbonara, hated the bechamel sauce on lasagne. It just wasn't my style. What was my pasta style you ask? Mainly plain boiled. Occasionally sprinkled with tasty cheese. A kid of adventurous taste buds, huh! If I had to have sauce on my pasta it would be tomato based. I had a thing for tomatoes. Tomato soup, baked beans, tomato sauce on pancakes.. well, pretty much tomato sauce on anything!

So I was kind of perplexed when I had the sudden urge to make some creamy pasta dish for lunch the other day. Whaaa?

Always one to honour the bod, I set about making my creamy sauce... with a little twist :)

Why is it green, you ask? Well, that would be the avocado of course!

Creamy-dreamy Avocado, and Hommus Pasta Sauce:
Ingredients:
1/2 chopped avocado
1 1/2 tablespoons hommus
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

And that's it!

Stick it all in a mini food processor and whaz until smooth:
I stirred this super thick and utterly addicting sauce through my boiled brown rice and quinoa spaghetti plus some oven roasted zucchini, capsicum, mushrooms and eggplant as well as some garlic tofu: (that is after a few taste-tests from the processor...)
It was so delicious and exactly what I was craving! Definitely recommend giving this one a try if you're in the mood for all the creaminess and decadents of a creamy pasta dish, minus all the saturated fat and other nonsense typically found in those sauces.
Happy, happy days!

Your turn:
What was your favourtie pasta sauce as a kid?
Are you a fan of creamy pasta sauces?
Ever tried an avocado pasta sauce? They're all the rage on Pinterest!

That's it for today folks, I hope you all have a lovely day, eat something delicious and smile! Bye friends!! :D

Sunday links for all!

Happy Sunday everyone!!

It seems every Sunday I'm starting off my intro talking about the green smoothie I've just downed enjoyed and you might start suspecting that's all I ever have for breakfast. Not the case, but for some reason I just crave a big, creamy, delicious green smoothie every Sunday? Strange.
Here is this morning's beast with 1 chopped frozen banana (it was a massive frozen banana!) + a massive handful of spinach+ 1/4 frozen avocado + 3 big scoops greek yoghurt + 1/3 cup rolled oats and sprinkle of chia seeds left to sit in 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk for around 20 mins + 1 large tablespoon cashew butter + 1/4 cup water- whazzed up until smoothie-licious!
It has been smoothie-mania for the last week I will admit though, my body is probably telling me something about my spinach intake (I crave the green ones!) and I'm not complaining!
I jut don't understand my body though, coming into Winter and it craves all the smoothies, Summer heat starts wafting in and I'm eating all the warm oats. Life.

So that was my Sunday morning- relaxed, filled with creamy, refreshing smoothie and also a typing up of some of my favourite links from the past week to share with you guys! Enjoy :)
