Be healthy- for you!!

Hello, hello there friends! Today's topic is one I'm quite passionate about in that it is about our health, the way we live, the way we perceive certain things.

The vague word of things meaning food and exercise.

There's a big separation between people I've found.

On the one hand you have those straight-to-the-point, blunt, no question about it people who's response to the ultimate question of how to stay at a healthy happy weight is;

'It's simple calories in < calories out.'

And I mean, sure that makes sense in theory. But you would often find with these types of people that their lives become extremely structured (this is only a very broad overview and in no way assumes every single person who has a similar belief behaves like this!!) in that meal plans weigh out every morsel of food, certain foods are foregone because their calorie count is too high and an extremely structured and planned exercise regime has to be carried out on the daily to ensure the optimal weight is maintained.

So, yes, this is a way in which becoming a healthy weight can be achieved. But if I'm honest with myself, that's not a way in which I want to be living my life on this Earth. I don't want to wake up each morning with the structured plan of my entire eating schedule formulated in my brain and quite possibly written out on a meal plan somewhere.

I don't want to have to force myself to go to the gym for specifically 45 minutes of intense cardio if I'm feeling a nice relaxing yoga session.

I don't want to make living a happy, healthy life, an unhappy, mentally, emotionally and probably eventually physically unhappy life.

And then there's those on the other end of the spectrum, who like most other people desire the happiest, healthiest, most energetic body they can, however look at food and exercise in a negative light. As something dread-worthy- on account of perhaps the stigma the above life creates about what a 'healthy' life entails.

This in turn could lead to a healthy body weight once again (depending on the strength of your will!) however ultimately an attitude like this will result in a negative atmosphere surrounding your very being. So the most common answer for those acquiring this attitude to health and well being would be to neither eat to honour their bodies, or exercise. And this too saddens me at all the positives a healthy relationship with food and exercise can elicit.

More examples of different views towards health include all those ever-changing new fandangled fad diets, claiming eating 25+ bananas a day is the way to be healthy, not eating a certain food will make you the happiest and healthiest you've ever been, eating at certain times of the day will cement the perfect body you've always dreamed of, this type of exercise will age you, this type of exercise will blast away ALL the fat! So on and so on.

So you're question to me right now is probably; 'Well Steph, what's your big secret to health and happiness in one's body?'

And it's probably fair of me to come up with something seeing as I've just listed multiple ideas and attitudes that I deem unhealthy in relation to wellbeing. So here it is:

Eat for you.

Exercise for you.

Live for you.

Because in the end everybody is different! If someone told me that a low-fat diet is the only solution to maintain a healthy weight, I would reach into my cupboard/ fridge and spoon a big blob of peanut butter (or other nut butter!) into my mouth right then and there.

Don't look for some magical answer that will resolve all of your health issues. Instead find out what works for you. From quite a long time of experimenting myself I've come to some conclusions about the way in which my body looks and functions its best...

First of all, I know that my body needs fuel. And a lot of it!
 Post

I don't hold back portion sizes as a result of a calorie plan for my day. If my stomach is at the stage where it wants to eat itself, I l feed the beast.

I have also found I feel best on plenty of veg, a bit less fruit and then wholegrains. My ratio would probably be a higher ratio of my calories from fruit, veg and healthy fats and then protein and carbohydrates from wholegrains. But that's me! Your body could be a protein loving machine. Or a carb consuming engine. It depends on you.
Avo, eggs and cashews- give me all the good fats!!

As for exercise- that's probably the most volatile aspect of my life! I have phases where I run up to 6 times a week, then times when it's only 1 or 2 and I supplement in weight training, online workouts or yoga. It depends on what feels right for my body an I listen to that to ensure I don't feel a sense of dread when I go to exercise- because exercise should be something you look forward to and love doing!

Now, this post is getting a little lengthier than expected (see? Passionate!) so I'll wrap it up here :)
When it comes to health and doing what's best for your body- you do you! Don't get sucked into the next big craze or see that a super model only eats carrots for her lunch so now you will only eat carrots for your lunch. Eat the foods that make your stomach smile and move your body in the way that energises and invigorates your body for the whole day.

Healthy isn't a set pre-packaged plan. Healthy is a random experiment that we all need to test out for our entire lives to get the most valid and fair result. :P (Science jokes from the girl in exams :)

So tell me:
Have you ever struggled to work out what works best for your body?
Ever got sucked into a diet plan/ way of living that simply wasn't right for you?
If you have worked out what works best for you, tell me below!

That's it for today friendly friends. I hope you have an amazing rest of your week- do something fun that you enjoy and as always; EAT SOMETHING DELICIOUS!! Bye for now! :D

Fruit- glorious fruit!

Happy Sunday friendly friends!!

The sun is out, the birds are singing and it. is. HOT!

Hellooooo Summer!

And you know what else comes with Summer??

ALL. THE. FRUIT!

I'm not going to lie here. This is a place of truth, trust and honesty. I have been eating a lot of fruit. And I love it!

Behold: FRUIT!
So, yes, fruit has been on the regular lately, which is why when I woke up not feeling too flash I knew some nice easy fruit was the way to go (any dairy at all was not on the brain.) And I also had perfectly ripe mangoes sitting patiently in the fruit bowl:
This was the mango prior to slicing up...
This was the mango post slicing up and also eating the remains :P
I also made pancakes... because, well- pancake Sunday!

These guys were just my typical banana bread spelt pancakes :) Topped with mixed nut and seed butter and crunchy peanut butter.

Breakfast was awesome:

Saturday food musings :P

So it's Saturday, which means it's the weekend, which means I have a bit more time on my hands, which means my brain is a-thinking, which means I'm thinking about food.

Award for the best intro ever? Yep, that's what I thought!

Any who, back my thinking!

Do you ever start watching a video on YouTube and then all of a sudden (some time later) you've come across the most random videos that had no correlation at all to the one you were watching??

Well, I get that a lot and the other day after flicking to the Tube (ahh Steph) for some funny cat video or something, I ended up scrolling through some raw vegan 'What I Eat In A Day' 's (similar to our WIAW, however video-i-fied.). I was kind of enraptured by these videos and kept watching them, and looking back now it was probably the extremities of their diet that made me want to watch more and more (hey, humans are curious by nature!)

In case you've never heard of raw vegan or are just unsure of what it really means to be a raw vegan, here is the definition below:

Raw veganism is a diet that combines the concepts of veganism and raw foodism. It excludes all food and products of animal origin, as well as food cooked at a temperature above 48 °C (118 °F).

However it was not the fact that these people were eating vegan or fully raw that fascinated me. It was the type and amount of food they were consuming.

When I became vegetarian people told me that I would need to up my intake of food a little bit in order to sufficiently gain all my nutrients and kilojoules and sure, that made sense to me. So I wonder why it surprised me so much when a raw vegan (especially the low-fat high carb diet followers) have to eat the quantities they do.

The videos would show the YouTuber waking up to a breakfast of 3 whole chopped cantaloupes, or a smoothie consisting of 8 bananas, spinach, coconut water and maybe some other fruit, followed by a lunch of 10 red bell peppers, a whole cucumber and more fruit in a salad bowl the size of a small tub. Dinner might consist of 3-4 baked sweet potatoes as well as 3-4 white potatoes and some more salad/ fruit.

My first reaction to all of this (which I am quite ashamed of) is; these people are nuts! How they can they be eating this much food (especially fruit). Surely their stomachs can't handle this and they get extremely bloated/ uncomfortable. Surely this cannot be healthy. Surely, surely, surely.

But the other main thing that stuck out from all these videos was just how happy and energised and excited these people were about their food and way of living. Multiple commented about the amount of energy they now have as a result of becoming raw vegan and the way all this fresh produce makes them feel so good!

No, this was not a long and convoluted way of telling all of you that I am becoming raw vegan. I just don't think I could keep that up! (And bananas can be expensive over this side of town... in Australia). No, this post was just to remind everyone- and remind me- that everyone's different and no matter how extreme you might find something (like eating an entire watermelon for lunch) if it works for someone else and makes them feel happy, healthy and energised, who are we to judge?

Now, I'm off to enjoy some coconut butter truffles and a grape smoothie- because, you know, I'll do what I know makes my body feel awesome!

What about you?
What are your thoughts on raw veganism?
Do you follow a type of diet?
3 foods that always make you feel great!

I hope you all have a brilliant Saturday, do something super fun and eat something super delicious! Bye for now friends!! :D

WIAW #80 Eating to fuel the brain :D

Happy Wednesday friendly friends!

I'm not going to lie though, I had to check what day it was today because my brain is so deep fried right now it could give me heart disease!

Ahhh, good one Steph!

Yes, so as you can tell the exams are sucking out all of my sanity and I am saving my normal-sounding sentences for those never-ending blank lines that always ask so much of me!!

Anywho, today's not about proper English and fully formed sentences. Nope- today's about FOOOOOD. In the form of WIAW of course! So let us enjoy a day full of eats!! Thanks as always to the wonderful Peas and Crayons for creating this link-up and enabling me to drool over what everyone else consumes in a day. :)

Breakfast:
When I am in the midst of exams it is fundamental for me to do two things beforehand.
1. Move.
At least a little bit.
It gets my mind a-thinking! So today I did my daily fitness challenge and then did a quick Blogilates workout! They may be short and sweet but boy do they get your heart rate up!

And number 2?
Eat something utterly delicious!!
For some reason these past few days have seen a barely there hunger and a bit of a wonky stomach. Strange... probably stress, who knows?
So instead of a big bowl of flavourful, sticky, delicious oats, I went for a tall creamy jar of smoothie!
This guy was a banana-berry green smoothie bash and totally hit the spot!
Frozen banana + frozen mixed berries + frozen zucchini + kale + spinach+ greek yoghurt+ oats soaked in almond milk + mixed nut butter + water- whazzed until smooth!
I love how filling this guy was!
After 3 hours of chemistry... yep, chemistry.. I needed some tasty vibes.
So between two pieces of delicious light rye bread I placed some hommus, grilled veggie patty, shredded carrot, cucumber, tomato, capsicum and shredded lettuce:
Easy, simple, and delicious!!
Snack for today was at around 4pm after some more studying for my economics exam and involved some brilliant brain food:
Fruit and soy milk!
Some yummy crisp and sweet brown pear, and kiwi fruit :)
As dinner time rolled around I was in the mood for some roast veg (they have been a big hit with me lately!) which included pumpkin, broccoli, brussels, eggplant, potato, parsnip and swede:
There were also some lentils and spinach thrown into the mix for extra nutrients and filling factor :D
Afterwards I had four pitted dates to round out the day and end on a sweet note!

So that's what I ate!!

What about you:
What are two essential to-do's on a day when you need to use your brain!?
Favourite type of bread? I think rye would be up there with my favourites along with spelt :)
Thing that has made you smile uncontrollably lately? I would have to say it has been my friends sending me random videos of them singing along to random dubsmashes. They are strange ones! But oh so funny :P

That's it from me today folks! I hope you have a lovely day, do something you love and as always; eat something delicious!! Bye! :D

Exam fooooood

Hello folks!
How's your week been traveling so far? I am currently in the midst of exams (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday this week!) so things have been a tiny bit stressful over these parts but not too bad because my secret weapon is staying positive! That was not supposed to sound as lame and childish as it did, but in all seriousness a positive mind is so, so powerful!!

Any who, I didn't say it was my only secret weapon though.

The other?

Why, it's none other than a super healthy, delicious AWESOME breakfast to power my brain through the multiple hours in front of an A4 booklet of paper.

Featuring bananas, oats, protein powder, cinnamon and all the other good stuff, here is one of the breakfasts that fueled me:
Yep! I made an oatmeal bake!! Something I haven't done in quite a while! You can check out one I made a while back here.
To make this little beauty I simply cooked up 1/2 heaped cup rolled oats with 1 cup almond milk, 3/4 sliced banana, scoop of vanilla protein powder, dash of cinnamon and sprinkle of chia seeds until the liquid was absorbed (I added about 1/4-1/2 cup water as well for a little extra volume)

Then I lined the bottom of a  mini loaf pan with baking paper, sprayed the edges and pured the oat mix in, topping off with the remaining sliced banana:
And baking in the oven at 180 degrees celsius for around 20 mins, or until banana has caramelised and top has hardened:
Of course it wasn't complete yet...

A nice slathering of cashew butter topped it off with a bang!
Eaten alongside a refreshing cup of cherry fro-yo (handful of frozen cherries + 3 big scoops greek yoghurt- whazzed together until smooth) which complemented the baked oatmeal quite nicely.
This was so delicious; warm and gooey, mixed with random sections of hot, sweet banana and warm fudgey cashew butter..
Belly was happy!
And sure, sometimes when you're in exam week, breakfasts can be a little more... haphazardly delicious instead of looking utterly perfect...
In that instance, you simple make your delicious creation and shove it in an almost empty jar of nut butter:
There are no words :)

In the mix was steel cut oats, cherries, chia seeds, banana, almond milk and water- cooked until absorbed in a saucepan and then stirred together with some greek yoghurt.
Soooo tasty!

And I'm also not gonna lie- the dinners have been simple, strange and whatever foods I've been feeling like chucked in a bowl and consumed in great speed. Because hey- exams!?

Any who, a week and a bit left and then I am free as a bird to cook and create and EAATT to my hearts content! So look forward to that (I know I am!!)

What about you?
Do you make oatmeal bakes on the reg?
Fav flavour of oatmeal bake?
Exams- what was your comfort food that got you through?? Hellooo nut butter! ;)

Well that's it from me today folks, I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day/ week/ whenever I talk to you next (my ability to form complete sentences seems to be coming and going at the moment. I blame that on studying.) and in the meantime; ENJOY SOME DELICIOUS FOOOOD! Okiedokie, bye for now friendly friends!! :D
